Madeira is a fortified wine made on the island of Madeira and Henriques & Henriques is the largest independent producer of Madeira, a privately owned company dating back to 1850. Madeira made from Bual is typically less sweet than that from Malvasia (Malmsey) but more sweet than from Sercial or Verdelho, The vines are common in Portugal and Spain where the fruit is used in the same way for fortified wines. Bual vines require more heat than other varieties used to make Madeira so the main Bual vineyards are found at Madeira’s warmer locations. All Madeira ages well but Madeira Bual can outlive almost any other wine.
